Artist's Quote:

  • I have been making ceramic tile mosaics since the mid-1970's, ranging from small works for private indoor use to large interior and exterior public murals, playground sculptures and architectural decorations.
  • In the public projects, whether for city Arts Commissions or private developers, I work with architects, designers and project managers on a site-specific basis, within the requirements of time schedules, budgets, and safety codes. I design and fabricate my works, and have developed methods of fabrication that allow me to build large works, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, in sections to be assembled at the site for quick installation.
  • My inspiration has been Gaudi's work and, except for the Dome on Rodeo Drive where I used glass tiles, I use ceramic tiles. I do not make the tiles myself but get them from diverse commercial sources. Sometimes I use the tiles in their manufactured shapes, but mostly I cut and shape them and with the cut pieces I improvise surface movements and rhythms of color, shape and size within a loosely drawn overall design, keeping the grout lines relatively tight. With mosaics, the completed works can be viewed with pleasure at a distance, but added enjoyment is close up, in the details.
