Kathryn Luther

  • Kathryn Luther is an artist and art educator from Fargo, ND working primarily in the medium of mosaic. She has been producing and exhibiting mosaics made of glass and clay tiles since 1983. Wall panels, pottery, sculptures and furniture are mosaicked with clay tiles made in her studio south of Fargo.
  • "An artist who teaches, I am committed to sharing my passion for all art. My college degree was just the beginning of a journey which has led me through years of experimentation, discovery and personal expression in an unusual medium. Mosaics are an ancient and durable art form made from clay, glass, stone, wood, paper; any material which can be broken and cut to form a design. The earthenware tiles used in the majority of these mosaics are produced in my studio south of Fargo. Whether a wall piece, pottery, sculpture or furniture, each mosaic is, by nature, a testimony to the humble appeal of shape, color and texture."
  • "The first mosaic I ever attempted was in 1983 using commercial tiles which I broke on the basement floor. Crude but effective! I nevertheless began to search for more efficient methods and in these past fifteen years (and hundreds of mosaics later) have refined my techniques to include better tools, a kiln and pottery studio. My tiles are hand-produced or altered, which allows me to work in more detail with an infinite palette of colors and textures. I begin each project with an idea, an appropriate surface (either two or three dimensional), a studio full of tiles and some odorless adhesive! After I have finished gluing the tiles in place, the design is then grouted and cleaned. Although the majority of the mosaics start from a bag of earthenware clay, I occasionally use other materials including stained glass and found objects."
